Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent?

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular cosmetic treatments, with over three million Americans undergoing the procedure each year. Patients often choose laser hair removal because it’s quick, convenient, and more comfortable than shaving or waxing, but many still wonder if the results it provides are permanent.
At Plainsboro Princeton Medical Associates, internal medicine physician Aruna Chakala, MD, offers in-office laser hair removal at both the Plainsboro Township and Monroe, New Jersey, locations. Read more to learn how laser removal works, whether the results are permanent, and what to expect during treatment.
How does laser hair removal work?
Laser hair removal is an outpatient cosmetic procedure that reduces or removes unwanted body hair. It uses concentrated light energy (lasers) to target the hair follicles, which slows hair growth. Specifically, the lasers heat the treated hair follicles, which stops or delays hair from growing.
Laser hair removal is versatile and can be used safely on almost any part of the body, including:
- Legs
- Back
- Bikini area
- Face
- Underarms
The treatment is most effective for patients with light skin and dark hair; however, technological advances have improved results for those of all skin types.
Are the results permanent?
Laser hair removal significantly reduces hair growth, but the results vary from person to person. Many patients experience noticeable, long-term hair reduction, but the procedure doesn’t stop hair growth entirely. As a result, you typically need multiple sessions, followed by routine touch-ups to maintain your results.
Outcomes depend on several factors, including your skin tone, hair color, and hormones. If initial treatments don’t meet expectations, we can adjust your treatment plan as needed.
What to expect during laser hair removal
To ensure optimal results, we typically recommend between two and six laser hair removal appointments. In areas with faster hair growth, such as the legs and face, sessions get spaced four to eight weeks apart. For slower-growing places, such as the back and underarms, sessions are scheduled every 12 to 16 weeks.
Regardless of the treatment area, the procedure is always the same. You sit or lie down, and your provider places a handheld laser device against your skin. Once activated, the light beams penetrate your skin and target your hair follicles. It’s normal to feel tingling or a warm, pinprick-like sensation during treatment, but most patients don’t find it painful. Talk to your provider at any time that you’re uncomfortable; they can adjust the settings.
You can return to work and other activities immediately after treatment. However, you should avoid direct sunlight and apply sunscreen whenever going outside.
