Can I Get Botox and Fillers at the Same Time?
Getting older provides many benefits, including wisdom and experience, but it also affects your skin’s appearance. As we age, collagen and elastin (the proteins that keep skin smooth and supple) decrease, wrinkles start forming, and skin sags. There’s no way to prevent these issues entirely, but Botox® and dermal fillers can help turn back the clock.
At Plainsboro Princeton Medical Associates in Plainsboro Township and Monroe, New Jersey, experienced internal medicine physician Aruna Chakala, MD, regularly uses cosmetic injectables to help patients look and feel their best.
This blog highlights the difference between Botox and dermal fillers and explains when you can use them together.
How are Botox and dermal fillers different?
Botox and dermal fillers are both cosmetic injectables, but they serve different purposes.
Botox
Botox — a cosmetic treatment, reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. When injected beneath your skin, it blocks nerve signals from reaching the muscles in your face, causing them to relax. This muscle relaxation smooths out your skin, making you look younger.
Dermal fillers
Dermal fillers are also cosmetic injectables. The difference is they plump up lost facial volume. As collagen and elastin production declines, your skin sags, and your cheeks become hollow. Dermal fillers “fill” these areas, making your skin smoother and younger-looking.
Can I get Botox and dermal fillers together?
Yes! Aging affects everyone’s skin differently, but many people experience a combination of wrinkles, sagging skin, and other subtle changes. Since Botox and dermal fillers address different problems, administering them together can enhance your results and prevent another appointment.
Further, Botox and fillers rarely interfere with each other. Many patients find the treatments complement one another and provide lasting results.
What happens during a Botox and filler appointment?
We tailor Botox and filler treatment to each person’s needs. The combined procedure is often called a “liquid facelift.”
Before administering the injections, your provider asks about your goals and examines your skin. They mark the injection sites with a pen and then apply a topical anesthetic to ensure comfort.
Once the anesthetic sets in, your provider administers a series of Botox and filler injections into strategic areas. The number of injections you get depends on your goals and the treatment of skin imperfections. Typically, you feel a pinch or prick during each shot, but it shouldn’t be painful.
At the end of the procedure, your provider explains when to expect results and provides care instructions.
What can I expect after Botox and filler treatment?
After Botox and filler treatment, it’s normal to experience mild bruising, redness, and swelling at each injection site, but these symptoms improve over several days.
Following your appointment, avoid lying down for at least 2-4 hours so the Botox and fillers don’t move to unintended areas. Likewise, avoid strenuous activities, like intense exercise for a day.
